Spooky Glory of the Bending Light Rays

Photo date: February 1, 2016. Photographer: Mark Mahin.

The photo below was taken in Grand Central Terminal in New York, on a day in which it was unusually crowded. We see the incredibly strange effect I call the light metamorphosis, in which light rays rise way up above their source, often bending in strange ways.  We can even see light rising up from the video screens, almost making them look as if they were on fire.

The unaltered flash photo below has not been adjusted in any way. It was taken by an old digital camera, using no special settings. The exposure time was only 1/30 of a second. The camera was held stable while the photo was taken. If you open the photo in a separate browser tab to see it in full resolution, you can see the non-luminous details are sharp and non-streaked-- only the light rays look strange.

See here for other examples of this strange phenomenon taken at the same location.
